Cyberknife Radio-surgery is a safe choice for treating both
malignant& non-malignant tumors located in the unreachable part of the
body. With the help of high dose of radiation, the non-invasive method shrinks
tumor located inthe brain, liver, prostate, lung, spine, pancreas and the kidneys.
Cyber-knife is a robotic stereo-tactic radio-surgery,
which comprises a compact linear accelerator fixed on the arm of the robot. The
robot is totally controlled by the set of instructions fed into the computer by
the surgeon. It has an inbuilt X-ray
image which sends the image data to the surgeon. He will study the data and
with the help of software instruction the robot adjusts, locks and targets the
position for tumor destruction. It is frame-free and can be single or multi-session
for treating cancer effectively.
The session may last for ½ an hour
to 11/2 hours and doctor may call patient for 4-5 rounds. Its high
focused beams kills and shrinks inaccessible tumor located in the brain, spine,
lung, kidneys, prostate, pancreas, liver and breast. The nearby healthy tissue
is not affected by the radiation at all. The technology is cutting edge,
unconventional and efficacious compared to other radio surgeries. Some may need
head frames fitted into the skull or anesthesia for surgery, but this one
doesn’t need at all. After the Cyber-knife radio-surgery, patients can resume
their normal daily routine activities.
How does Cyber-knife work?
- No anesthesia or head frame is required to perform this painless procedure. The system automatically tracks the breathing and certain body movements.
- The Cyber-knife system imager sends the ‘painted’ image of the tumor along with its dimension and location area.
- The surgeon may fix small tissue markers near the site so that the CyberKnife system precisely targets the treatment area.
- Once data is studied, the system locks & targets the tumor. The minimal dosage of radiation is delivered for about 25 mins to an hour.
- Once done, the patient can leave clinic premises and return back to their routine activities.
- If required, the doctor may ask the patient to return for more treatment depending on the severity.
- The recovery is pretty quick and risk involved is very low because adjacent tissue is not damaged by the radiation.
