The surgery is recommended to women after studying the cause and the type of surgery is suggested accordingly. In some cases, only the uterus is removed whereas in other cases both the uterus and the cervix are removed. In the case of supracervical hysterectomy, only the upper part of the uterus is removed. In a total hysterectomy, the whole uterus and cervix is removed. However in the radical hysterectomy the entire uterus, the top part of the vagina, cervix and other tissues that are on the side of the uterus is removed. There are different techniques for performing hysterectomy surgeries. Doctors recommend the type of surgery depending upon the cause and overall health of the patient. The two kinds of the technique are the open surgery and the minimally invasive procedure.

·         Traditional or Open Surgery:-
Open Surgery is the most common type of approach to treating hysterectomy. Abdominal hysterectomy is an open surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision up to 5- to 7-inches on the upper side or side of the belly. The surgeon then removes the uterus through this incision. Generally, a woman spends more than three days in the hospital after the surgery. Scar is visible after the procedure.

·         Minimally Invasive Procedure:-
There are different types of approaches to minimally invasive procedure.
1.       Laparoscopic hysterectomy: - Laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure is performed using a thin tube called a laparoscope which has a camera at the end which is inserted in the belly through small cuts. In the case of a single site laparoscopic procedure, only one small cut made in the belly button. The surgeon performs the hysterectomy from outside the body, monitoring the operation on a video screen.
2.       Vaginal hysterectomy: - In this procedure the surgeon makes an incision in the vagina and removes the uterus through this incision. The incision is then closed.  No visible scars appear after this procedure.
3.       Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy: - In this procedure, laparoscopic surgical tools are used by the surgeons to remove the uterus through an incision made in the vagina.
4.       Robot-assisted laparoscopy hysterectomy: - This procedure uses robotic assistance. The procedure is similar to the laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure. The surgeon controls the robotic system of surgical tools from outside the body. The advanced technology used in this procedure allows the surgeon to use natural movements of the wrist and view the hysterectomy procedure on a three-dimensional screen.
5.       Minimally invasive procedure provides more benefits as compared to open surgery. Minimally invasive procedure provides faster recovery, shorter stay in the hospital, less scarring and pain. Women undergoing this procedure resume back to their routine within three to four weeks as compared to the traditional procedure which requires around five to six weeks to resume back to the routine.
