Low Cost Bone Marrow Transplant in India

Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone marrow is a soft, full of fat tissue present inside the bone, where blood cells like red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cell (WBCs) and platelets are made. These produced cells do the job of maintaining essential functions in the body. The bone marrow is considered to be very vital part of the body. A Bone marrow Transplant (BMT) is a type of medical procedure specially designed for patients suffering from specific diseases or cancers. The treatment is also called as ‘’hematopoietic stem cell transplant’’ or ‘’stem cell transplant’’. The procedure involves extracting of cells from the stem cells i.e. bone marrow. These cells are later filtered and are either transferred to same person/patient i.e. donor or other person. The goal of this surgery is to transfer healthy bone marrow cells inside a patient to treat damaged cells by various diseases. Below are some of the diseases that can be treated successfully by BMT are Solid Cancer Tumor (Not All), Multiple Myeloma Disease, Chronic Aplastic Anemia, various types of Lymphomas, Various kinds of Leukemia and Immune Deficiency Diseases.

Why Is A Bone Marrow Transplant Required?
A bone marrow transplant is mandatory for –
·         Patients suffering from a genetic disease that has effected different body organs.
·         Patients whose bone marrow has been damaged by other treatments like radiation and chemotherapy used for treating cancer.
·         Patients whose bone marrow stem cells are faulty or abnormal.

Different Types of Bone Marrow Transplants
Maximum number of bone marrow transplant procedures are depended on the donor. Mostly performed BMT procedures include -
·         Allogeneic BMT: This surgery involves a genetic type donor related to the patient. Stem cells are taken out by apheresis or a process called bone marrow harvest from the donor. Usually the donor are sisters or brothers. In some cases parents also may become the donor.
  • Unrelated BMT: An outsider from the family known as unrelated donor gives genetically matched stem cells or marrow to the patient. National bone marrow registries usually offer these kinds of donors.
  • A Parent: When a parent donates his or her marrow. There are cases where genetic match is rarely identical to the recipient it becomes a case of haploid-identical match BMT.
  • Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant: Once a baby is born, his or her stem cells are extracted from the umbilical cord which later reproduces into mature blood cells and are more effective than the bone marrow taken from an adult.
  • Autologous BMT: In this situation the donor is the patient himself. Wherein, stem cells are taken from a patient body through apheresis or bone marrow harvest and are again given back to him/herin the frozen form and is called a Rescue BMT.
Bone Marrow Transplant Procedure
The transplant procedures are based on the transplant type and the disease for which a BMT is required. It is also based on your level of tolerance for certain medicines. Usually, high doses of radiation or chemotherapy sittings aren’t healthy for certain people as these treatments damage the stem cells on a large scale making the patient weak and does not support growth of new cells.
  • The preparation of a bone marrow surgery involves high doses of radiation or chemotherapy as it is done to treat specific diseases and to create ample space for the new cells to get developed. This type transplant is called as Myeloablative or ablative due to its effect on the bone marrow. Majority of blood cells in the body are produced by the bone marrow through this procedure.
  • Another procedure where the BMT is typically given from the central venous catheter in the bloodstream after radiation or chemotherapy is done. This procedure is considered to be a non-surgical procedure. The stem cells soon start to grow into healthy blood cells by making their way into the bone marrow.
Recovery from a Bone Marrow Transplant
After the BMT procedure is performed, supportive care is must to prevent any post-surgery infections, side effects, and other complications. This includes regular blood tests, monitoring of vital symptoms, strict checking of amount of fluid input and output, daily weight measurement, and maintaining of a protected and clean atmosphere.

Recovery after a BMT surgery is long and stressful process for both the patient and the family. Initial few weeks are very serious as there are high chances of complications and rejections of the transplant. But, later the patient starts to feel better as the blood count begins to grow and his immune system becomes stronger. Full recovery may take up to a year or 2.
