What Is Gastric Imbrication surgery?
Gastric imbrication is a new
technique for weight loss. This surgery provides the surgeon with more control
over the stomach restriction of the patient and also provides the patients with
a reversible solution to obesity. The surgery uses a restrictive method and
creates a small stomach which reduces the amount of food intake automatically
resulting in fewer intakes of calories which further results in weight loss. In
gastric imbrication procedure, the surgeon folds the portion of the stomach on
itself and sutures the folds in place. After the procedure the portion of the
stomach will not be able to expand, limiting the intake of food a patient can
eat at one time.
Advantages
• Gastric imbrication surgery involves less
risk as compared to other bariatric surgeries as no part of the stomach or
small intestine is cut or removed.
• This surgery is one of the most effective
and efficient weight loss surgeries.
• The surgery avoids malabsorption of
nutrients and prevents additional nutrient-deficient complications from arising.
• Gastric imbrication can be reversed or
converted to another procedure relatively easily.
• The portion banned in the procedure can be
adjusted accordingly.
• Conditions such as diabetes or high blood
pressure can improve or disappear after the surgery.
• Combining procedures can bring incremental
increases in weight loss versus one procedure alone.
Procedure
Gastric imbrication surgery is
performed using minimally invasive surgical technique with a use of a
laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin tube which is attached to a light source
and a video camera. Gastric Imbrication is a restrictive procedure. This
surgery shrinks the size of the stomach by making large folds in the stomach’s
lining that makes the patients feel full sooner. The procedure reduces the size
of the stomach by 75%.
The surgery is performed under
general anesthesia and the entire procedure takes around 2 hours. The bariatric
surgeon makes a small incision in the abdomen of the patient through which
surgical tools are passed. The laparoscope is then inserted through one of
these incisions which provide the surgeon with a better view of the area.
During this procedure, the
bulging portion of the stomach is folded into its other half portion using
staples. The portion is then held in
place with non-absorptive sutures which form a small sleeve-like stomach pouch.
This results in decreased size of the stomach to a gastric sleeve proportion
without using any harmful or foreign objects. Unlike other weight loss
surgeries, Gastric Imbrication does not pose the risk of malabsorption. This is
a low-risk procedure with quick recovery.
Gastric Imbrication surgery before and after
Prior to the surgery:-
Prior to undergoing gastric
imbrication surgery, the surgeons will examine the medical condition of the
patient with the help of medical history and physical examination to prevent
any complications in the surgery. Before
the surgery the patient BMI is checked as it should fill the criteria of the
surgery. The BMI of the patient should be over 30.
Post-surgery:-
Post-surgery most patients make
a full recovery within a month. The patients are required to follow a diet for
optimum results:-
• Weeks 1 & 2: - The first two weeks after the surgery
requires the patients to mostly have a liquid diet which includes water, milk
and juice.
• Weeks 3 & 4: - In the following weeks the patients
are recommended to have vegetable and other soups that do not contain carbs in
it.
• Weeks 5 & 6: - In the 5th and 6th week the patients
can include fruit and yogurt in their diet.
• Weeks 7 & 8: - In 7th and 8th week of the diet the
patients can have bariatric diet in limited quantities as directed by the
bariatric dietician.
Light exercises and walking are
also recommended by the bariatric surgeon one month after the surgery.
