What is kidney transplant?
A kidney transplant is a
surgical process to treat kidney failure. Our kidney filters waste from our
blood and removes it from our body through urine and also helps in maintain the
body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. If a kidney stops workings the waste will
build up inside our body and can make us sick.
People who suffer from
kidney failure usually undergo dialysis treatment. Dialysis mechanically
filters waste that gets build up in the bloodstream when the kidney stops
workings. Dialysis treatment mechanically filters the waste that builds up in
the bloodstream when the kidneys stop working. In case if the patient’s kidneys
have failed doctors may recommend a transplant procedure, in which one or both
the kidneys are replaced with donor organs from a live or deceased person. A
kidney transplant can free a patient from lifelong dependence on a dialysis
machine and allows a patient to have a more active life.
Candidate for kidney
transplantation
Kidney transplantation
is recommended by surgeons for patients whose kidneys have stopped working
entirely. This condition is called as end-stage renal disease or end-stage
kidney disease. Doctors may recommend transplant to people who do not smoke,
drink alcohol in excess, or had any drug abuse.
Procedure of kidney
transplantation
For kidney
transplantation there are two types of donors:-
1. Living donors.
2. Deceased donor.
The donors chosen for
the transplants should have the close match with the patient to avoid
complications in future.
The entire procedure of
transplantation is performed under general anesthesia and takes around 5-6
hours. The surgeon then makes an incision in the abdomen of the patient. And carefully
places the donor liver inside in the patient’s body and connects the arteries,
veins and other structures to the kidneys which allow the flow of blood to the
new kidney. The surgeon then attaches the ureter to the bladder to urinate
normally. The surgeon will leave the original kidneys in the body unless
they’re causing problems such as high blood pressure or infection to the
patient.
Risks of Kidney Transplant
• Allergic reaction to general anesthesia.
• Blood clots.
• Leakage from the ureter.
• Infection.
• Failure of the donated kidney.
• Blockage of the ureter.
• Bleeding.
• Rejection of the donated kidney.
• Heart attack.
• Stroke.
