High Intensity Frequency Ultrasound (HIFU) Treatment

Overview
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) of Focused Ultrasound is anaccurate medical treatment that applies high-intensity focused sound energy to locally heat and destroy unhealthy or damaged tissue through ablation. HIFU is a hyperthermia treatment, a class of clinical therapies that uses temperature as a medium to treat various cancers. HIFU is also one type of therapeutic ultrasound, involving minimally invasive or non-invasive methods to direct sound energy into the body. HIFU is an outpatient treatment generally performed under local or general anesthesia that is completely radiation free.

When is a HIFU Treatment used?
HIFU is only useful to treat a single tumors or part of large tumors. It can't be used to treat tumors that are more extensive. This means that HIFU is not suitable for patients with cancer that has spread to more than one part in their body. HIFU does not pass through either solid bone or air. This means that it is not best suited to treat every type of cancer.

Types of cancers are treated with HIFU
·         Prostate Cancer
·         Kidney cancer
·         Primary and secondary liver cancer
·         Pancreatic cancer
·         Bladder cancer

How is HIFU Treatment Performed?
As it destroys the unhealthy tissue non-invasively, it is also known as non-invasive HIFU surgery. The procedure is robotic with hardly any manual interference. The entire HIFU treatment is done by moving the applicator on its robotic arm in order to put side by side multiple shots, according to the protocol designed by the Doctor/Surgeon. This technology can achieve accurate ablation of unhealthy tissue, and thus it is called 'HIFUsurgery'. Constantly updated real-time images are referred to, by the physician. These images are further help to map out and perform the entire treatment as planned. The physician can see the development of the treatment and modify it, if necessary.
The procedure thus works best for localized cancer without treating other surrounding tissues of the body and without making any surgical incision in the body.

Benefits of HIFU Treatment

  •          An outpatient procedure
Side effects of HIFU Treatment
People who have been treated with HIFU procedure so far have had minimal side effects. It may cause some uneasiness initially or you may experience slight pain for 3 to 4 days post treatment. And it may cause tenderness in the skin or back passage depending on the area being treated under HIFU treatment, but this is mild and doesn't last long.
